Edition #50: 6 Ways to Spark Desire & Revive Telco Accessory Sales

Walk into almost any telco store today and watch the moment a customer buys a phone. They tap a card, take the box, and pull out a case they ordered from Amazon three days ago. The accessory sale didn't lose on price…it never happened.

Accessories used to be the quiet profit engine of telco retail. In 2016, U.S. Cellular's CEO said high-end accessory sales covered its stores' operating costs. A decade later, that model has come apart - not with a crash, but with a slow drift of margin to e-commerce.

The instinct is to blame price. Amazon is cheaper, direct-to-consumer brands are cheaper, and customers can compare in seconds. But price is the symptom, not the cause. Accessory revenue is collapsing because stores stopped creating desire and context.

In this edition of Telco Talk, we'll look at what's actually happening to accessory revenue, why the price explanation doesn't hold up, and what telcos can do about it.

What The Numbers Actually Say

The accessory market isn't shrinking. Global forecasts estimate a growth of 7-8% per year.

For telcos, accessory sales are almost exclusively tied to handset activations. Retailers typically target a 40-60% attach rate on assisted upgrades, yet ABI Research found only 15% of respondents received a protective case with the phone or through a carrier bundle, while more than 62% bought one aftermarket.

In short, people are buying more accessories than ever - they're just not buying them from telcos.

Why “It's Cheaper Online” Is The Wrong Diagnosis

If price were the issue, premium accessories wouldn't sell at all. They do. MagSafe and Qi2 ecosystem gear, premium audio and higher-priced protection all keep growing - much of it above what a telco shelf charges.

Customers will pay a premium when the value is visible. What they won't do is pay one for a sealed box on a pegboard with no demonstration and no connection to the device in their hand.

Online retail wins on price transparency, infinite selection and algorithm-driven recommendations. But it can’t help someone feel the weight of a case, hear the difference in a pair of earbuds, or watch their phone snap onto a magnetic charger.

Physical retail has this structural advantage, but most stores have merchandised it away. A wall of identical chargers doesn't create desire; it creates a price comparison.

6 Steps To Supercharge Accessory Sales

1. Merchandise By Life, Not By SKU

Stop organizing the wall by brand and category. Organize it by what the customer is trying to do: the commuter, the creator, the traveller. Group the case, mount, power bank and cable into one story, not four separate SKUs.

Benefit: The customer stops comparing a $45 case to a $12 one and starts evaluating a solution.

2. Make The Value Felt, Not Read

Replace pegboards with working demonstrations. A charging station that takes a phone from 0 to 50% while the customer watches. A mount they can attach themselves. Earbuds they can put in their ears.

Benefit: Physical retail wins on sensory engagement, not inventory depth.

3. Sell The Moment, Not The Product

The highest-intent moment in telco retail is the unboxing. The customer has just committed to a device worth four figures and is holding it unprotected. That's the moment to talk about protecting the investment - not a “want a case with that?” prompt at the till. Add what a delivery box can't: protector fitted, everything working before they leave.

Benefit: You convert a commodity purchase into a service that the online giants can't provide.

4. Give Staff The Tools To Sell On The Floor

None of this works if the associate is stuck behind a fixed terminal. Invest in a tablet point of sale so staff can sell where the customer is standing - at the demo table, in the queue, beside the display.

The platform layer matters just as much. No associate can hold every plan, promotion and compatible accessory in their head. The best solutions automatically identify upsell items in the moment – lifting attach rates without pressure selling.

Benefit: Attach rate becomes a function of the system, not of who happens to be working that day.

5. Escape The Comparison Trap

Move toward exclusive, private-label or design-forward ranges that can't be cross-shopped item by item. Bundle protection, power and fitment into one priced solution, ideally folded into the device financing so the customer isn't weighing a $180 accessory against a $180 grocery bill.

Benefit: If the exact item doesn't exist on Amazon, the price comparison never starts.

6. Bring The Store Experience Online

With more sales originating online, digital channels deserve the same merchandising effort as your sales floor. Most e-commerce solutions link compatible accessories to devices - but this just tells a customer what fits, not why they'd want it. Instead, tell a story: show accessories in use, and use short videos to show what a spec sheet can't. Implement accessory finders that can recommend items based on the customer’s needs, so they see more than a price tag. For “buy-online and pickup in-store” scenarios, use the same unboxing technique in step 3.

Benefit: You get the reach of e-commerce with some of the persuasion of the store.

Time To Take Stock

Five questions worth asking this quarter:

  1. What is your attach rate on unassisted transactions, and how does it compare to assisted ones?
  2. How many of your accessory SKUs can be found cheaper online in under a minute?
  3. How much of your store is dedicated to demonstration, versus storage on display?
  4. Could an associate complete an accessory sale without returning to a fixed terminal?
  5. How can you sell accessories online more persuasively?

Final Thoughts

When customers can get accessories from anywhere, they need a compelling reason to buy them from you. By going all-in on storytelling, creating curated bundles, and upping the in-person experience, you’ll give your customers a reason to buy from you – not just a place to compare prices.

Is your store creating desire, or just holding inventory?
